Choosing the Right Camera for Your Project

Ever had so much choice that it becomes overwhelming? That’s what picking the right camera can feel like. There’s just so much choice nowadays from all the major brands and if we’re honest, they’re all great. They all do similar things, with just some minor differences. So this post isn’t going to focus on specific brands and models…it can get tense, put it that way. So whether you prefer Canon or Sony, are an avid Blackmagic user or prefer Panasonic for some reason, there’s still something here for you.

Yes, it’s true that the camera you use in video production plays a huge role in the final look and feel of the film. Choosing the right camera depends on project goals, budget, and style.

For cinematic corporate films or brand stories, high end cinema cameras provide stunning image quality, dynamic range, and colour depth. They create a professional, premium feel that aligns with strong brand identities.

For smaller, run and gun type shoots, such as social media content or behind the scenes films, lightweight cameras or mirrorless systems are often the best choice. These allow flexibility, fast setup, and discreet filming without compromising quality.

The major things to consider when choosing the right camera for your project are factors like resolution, frame rate, and lens mounting options. Personally, I put real value in colour depth and dynamic range and power options…essentially, what’s the battery life like on this thing and will it overheat? Most cameras all do 4K 50fps or 120fps nowadays – not all of them have 15 stops of dynamic range, it just depends on what’s more important to you.
